Being late as is my custom whatever the reason it just is, i missed the first two songs.(dire wolf on the
road again) this review starts with the Lovely and very well played Acoustic To Lay me down. from
there the vibe took on and cozy living room feel as the band joyfully took us through a groove that
found its way into a beautiful version of Birdsong that had the crowd swirling and the groove was set.
a beautiful I Know you rider the singalong fav ripple closed the set. after a funny little joke session
backstage IE.the parking lot, The band was back in full stride for some electric fun. Scott and the boys
opened with a nice Jack Straw into a candyman with tom at his soulful best. greatest story dripped into
ship of fools which lit the fuse for one of the more psychedelic version of Cassidy then hold on to
your hat Mister the Terrapin was epic!!!!the room was alive people emerging from all corners of the
cozy confines of the Grey Horse the get to the stage.. if that wasnt enough the wonderful Cindy lopez
left her mark on me as well as many others while taking the Music Never Stopped on and wild joyride. i
found my way back to my group sitting by the fire for Fire on the Mountain. the beginning of goin
down the road had the crowd back in a frenzy and Half Step blazed the skirts with a smoking version.
alway fun Johnny B Goode closed out what would be a nite most wont soon forget. Many thanks to the
expert staff at the Grey Horse and the Audience was top notch.
till we meet again

Last night's show was legendary! Great vibe and the band fed off it
completely. Joe has totally found his place, Tommy played with
passion and heart!

What a killer electrical set and as was stated above, the good music and fun went from good to killer from Terrapin out to Johnny B Goode. MNS and GDTR and Estimated were played with heart and soul and I hate up every second. There were some fun spinners to my left that made mine and my girl's evening just a blast.
I will be checking out Half Step's schedule over the summer in hopes of more fun nights like this one and don't forget us on the North Shore guys.

Loved every second of it! Good music, good company. Ripple was great, and Terrapin was out of this world. And yes, don't forget about us up on the North Shore.....there's a lot of us that would love to hear you here.:D

Thanks for the love folks! Half Step's next show will be at O'Reilly's in Oakdale on May 8th and we are pro
shooting video that night some come and be part of the party for posterity! I know it's another south
shore gig for those north shore people... sorry. But, Greg and Tom are doing acoustic shows every
Tuesday 7pm - 10pm in Northport at the "Northport Tasting Room" on Main St. There is where you will
get some north shore Half Step GD love until the full band can land a gig in that area... Any suggestions?

The songs on your site sound GREAT!
Looking forward to my first Half Step show when you guys are in Suffolk again.
I remember Cindy from the old Reckoning days and was wondering if she was still singing.
Great voice and harmonizing are excellent with you guys.
Love that you guys play Stagger Lee.

2010 -2011 was awesome, with halfstep's schedule of shows ranging from private gigs to Pubs to Winery's to outdoor shows to vintage stage venues and venturing into the NYC and NJ scenes. Can't wait to see the 2012 schedule and only hope I can make it to more shows. Thank you Halfstep for making music that makes our lives "just a little bit more" enjoyable...

Best Dead cover band. Played in my brothers yard. Oh what a night. If you are looking to expand your songlist, how about trying the one time only sung I Wash My Hands In Muddy Waters. Always have a great time either at K.J. Farrels or Toomeys, just waiting for next show. Keep up the excellant work.

I saw your band last night @ Tanner Park, and although your vocals and playing are point on I was very disappointed by your playlist. Now while I understand playing a good amount of 80's music because that is where they saw much of their commercial success, the Dead have many big hits though from the late sixties, seventies. I didn't hear Sugar Magnolia, Mexicali Blues, One more Saturday Night, Uncle Johns Band, Friend of the Devil, Etc. Even their 70 commercial hits like Truckin' and Casey Jones weren't played. I looked so forward to that concert for weeks, and recommended it to several people, and what did they hear? Good Lovin and Shake down Street...while good songs, they were done by the Rascals and Chuck Berry, and just "fill" in songs for their albums as far as I'm concerned. I was a dead head in the mid seventies, and would love to hear you again, although unless the playlist changes I will not. Your site lists many other songs, and you may play them and I'm sure you do, although in order to please all, you really need to slip in some more of a variety. The atmosphere was just like a Dead concert (and I commented on that), and as you know "there is nothing like a Dead concert". I just hope you cater more to the older Dead fans and not just the "Johnny come lately s". Another word of advice (and possibly not welcomed), although here it is anyway. While the vocals and sound were point on, the songs Ramble on Rose and Tennessee Jed need to have the Tempo picked up. The are both great dancing songs as most if not all Dead music is, and they were just too slow. I apologize for the rough review, although please take it as constructive criticism, because like I said your vocals and sound were/are great, it is just the choice of music I was disappointed in. Unfortunately they are no longer around and Jerry died in 1995, so cover bands are it. So if you want to be in the limelight you need to hear it from both sides.
Thanks and have a good day,
Fred

Fred, Thank you for your very honest and constructive criticism. We completely value it and get where you're coming from. As you know, the Grateful Dead have a very vast catalog of music and there is something in there for everyone. Unfortunately, as the saying goes, "you can't please everyone". There were many a Grateful Dead show back in the day where we may have left feeling disappointed about their playing and/or their song selection. Only to find the next concert to be an entirely different and more satisfying experience. We are sorry that we did not deliver the repitiore that you would have expected.
In all fairness, Half Step strives to keep the GD tradition of rotating songs and not playing too many repeats within our show schedule. Ironically, some of the songs on your wish list were performed at our last two shows prior to Tanner. We felt our set at the park was well rounded. Yes we played "Shakedown" and "Good Lovin'", but we also delivered "Bertha", "Beat it on Down the Line", "Dire Wolf", "Mama Tried", "Cumberland Blues", "Cassidy", "Help on the Way", "Slipknot", "Franklin's Tower", "Eyes of the World", etc.. All of which are songs from the early to mid 70's and are known crowd favorites. In fact there was only one song played from the 80's and that was "Standing on the Moon" to compliment the beautiful, full, blue moon in the sky that we all experienced.
Being true Deadheads inside and out, we totally understand the feeling of disappointment or jubilation on any given performance, just as life itself is full of ups and downs. It's part of what makes the Grateful Dead universe so unique and timeless.
We are sorry to hear that you left the show less than satisfied and hope that you would see us perform again in the future and have a better experience. Peace, love and grateful regards!

Thanks so much for the comment, it was a true Grateful Dead response. It is funny I forgot, until you said that there were many Dead Heads back in the day that left a concert a bit disappointed because of their song selection, did I remember that I was one of them. The Dead do have a large collection of songs and it would be impossible to satisfy all, which is why I needed to go to many a show. Again thanks. By the way I did notice you played all the songs you mentioned, yet because of the length of individual Dead songs you chose to put many of them in compilation songs. I am on your mailing list, and just like following the Dead, I will see you guys again and again in order to enjoy that full repitiore.

Just wanted to thank you folks for superb night at Tanner Park. The music, weather and scene were as good as you could possibly ask. As for summer highlights this night was at the top of the list. What a great venue. Thanks again for doing what you guys do. It really was excellent.

The Feb 5 show @ KJ Farrells sounded great. TLEO was very fast. Was that how the song was played very early on? I noticed a slightly different way Half Step played. I like how bands attempt to keep their music as fresh as can be. I remember after each new year, the Grateful Dead also took on a different personality. I always looked forward to the changes the Dead made each year: Eyes went through alot of transformations; FOTD was slow, then fast, then slow; and even sliding a short Jam into El Paso towards the end. So, likewise, I look forward to the hearing/seeing more of Half Step's 2016 music.

You hit the nail on the head Lance about the evolution of songs over the eras. We do strive to be that authentic by following some of these trends that our original master's had gone through. Case in point, Dig this TLEO... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylXVkUaEDK4

No mention of the Paramount show in the comments?
Pity! That was great high energy show....we were all lovin' it!!
Seeing you guys play to large groups of the faithful is an amazing thing to see and feel.
And the Plattdeutsch, even though I know you guys struggled some equirment issues that night, was phenomenal as well.
I came with a whole bunch of "Half Step newbies" who are now part of the "converted"?
Looking g forward to somne nice get-downs at KJ's this weekend!!

Saw the band for the 1st time at American Beauty club in NYC Friday May 27, 2016.
I first saw the Grateful Dead at the Village Theater (pre-Fillmore East) in Dec 1967 so I've been to many shows original, incarnations, tributes.
Half Step REALLY captures the spirit...amazing show!

I entered a comment on Feb 6 about how each bands' style of playing changes from year to year (like the Dead) and how I was looking forward to 2016 Half Step music. Last night, at Mulcahy's, was a perfect example! The quick beat of Cold Rain and Snow had a jazzy feel; Jac-O-Roe with its reggae/carribean beat; Loved the Dark Hollow, it came out of nowhere! I said to myself "is this Dark Hollow?". Loved it. And finally, I think, The Other One, between verses, drifted away ever so quietly, wondering where it's going, and then smoothly and quietly, Scott begins to skip through the lillie fields.Wonderful show. I hope these good feelings last the whole week. See you at The Lounge.

The pre-1970's songs played at Mulcahy's Friday night 6/3 were amazing.
Mason's to open, BAM!, then Cold Rain+Snow, BA-BAM!; there was a Hard to Handle and Dupree's mid-set, and China-Rider to close it out, and that was just the [incomplete] first set.
Pretty sure there was an OtherOne [thanku Lance], ViolaLeeBlues, and MorningDew? in the 2nd.
It's like a dream we dreamed one afternoon long ago...the effort was obvious...they played hard, loud and clean...Jerry Would Love This Band. These guys can nail that GD 1960's groove 50 YEARS after CaptainTrips+TheNeverEverLandBand put this stuff out there...and I can just roll into Wantagh on a Saturday night, put my money down, and time warp back to the Fillmore East.
I want the band to know how appreciative I am to hear songs played the way I never had a chance to see+hear them played.
I'll be looking for some GoldenRoad, CreamPuffWar, and Alligator this summer...so warm them nuggets up.
Also worthy of a great big thanku was Cindy singing Sunrise before Terrapin [you sound better than DonnaJean ever did!]
...and LazyLightnin'->Supplication was off the hook AGAIN!...
LIVE MUSIC IS BETTER - BUMPER STICKERS WILL BE ISSUED!
I'll see you escapin' through the lily fields friends....

Saw your great shows at the last two Jerry Jams. I hope you don't mind, but I sent Fred Rose some You Tube links of your sets with Tom using the DeadBolt and Wolph guitars. We're both wondering if you could please identify what gear Tom uses to recreate Jerry's tone.

Thanks for creating a space in your website where your fans can interact with you. Or just talk to fellows fans. Music is a mood booster for me. I like music in general but I prefer easy listening music. When I work on my topresume com reviews project, I tend to listen on the slow tune and melody. I think it helps be calm and think better.
